5. WASHINGHTON

Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia), the national capital of the United States, is the seat of the President, federal government and Congress and the political, cultural and economic center of the country.

Washington is world famous for its parks and green areas. About 7 thousand acres of the District is currently devoted to public parkland.

The District of Columbia was established by the Act of Congress in 1790. The site for the capital was chosen by President George Washington himself and the capital was designed by the French engineer Pierre L’Enfant. He was helped by Thomas Jefferson, later the third President of the United States.  

5. NEW YORK    
New York is the most populated city of the United States with about 10 million people. It is also the biggest port in the USA. New York City is subdivided into five boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island and Brooklyn. Almost all of the Bronx is situated on the mainland, but the other boroughs are situated on islands. In all, New York City comprises some 50 islands. It is one of the world's leading commercial, financial, and cultural centres. There are 4 airports, 15 TV stations, 39 radio stations, over 100 hospitals, 29 universities, a lot of cinemas, galleries and other cultural insitutions. New York has the largest subway system in the world. It is sometimes called "The Big Apple".

History
The history of New York City can be traced back to Dutch colonial days when the area was inhabited by Indians. Manhattan Island was bought from the Indians by the Dutch in 1626 and the town on the tip of the island was named New Amsterdam. Later (in 1664) it was renamed by the English to New York.

New York City landmarks
New York City, and particularly Manhattan, has many interesting architectural sites. There are quite a number of famous skyscrapers that dominate the skyline; the Flatiron Building, completed in 1902, was one of the first in the city. Others include the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building and the group of buildings that make up the Rockefeller Center.
Other famous landmarks include the Statue of Liberty which stands on Liberty Island; Ellis Island which served as the point of entry for immigrants to the United States from 1892 to 1954; Grand Central Terminal; and the United Nations complex. There's Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and Shea Stadium in Queens. Other major sports facilities in the city include Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. There are many attractive places where visitors like to go - some of the most widely known are Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge. You can also visit famous theatres on Broadway.
