20.+14. Environment

Nature
- everything living on the earth
- we are surrounded by nature, and also a part of it
- you can go to the nature – it means somewhere to a forest, mountains, simply said it is a place untouched by people
- you can see animals, plants and trees there, you can breath fresh air, you can listen to a blowing wind …….
- people damage nature: pollution of air, water and land (cutting trees, toxic gases into the air, hunting and killing animals etc.)

Protection
- using alternative power supplies (solar, wind, ground, water)
- better exhaust systems in cars, less cars – less gases
- trying to recover nature supplies, e.g. trees
- stop killing threatened animals (endangered species)

Pollution
- affects air, water, land, people, animals, plants
- air pollution: industrial production of factories and power stations, car exhaust gases, smoke, dust etc. – all this mixed with water vapour leads to acid rains which damage trees and plants

Trees
- lungs of our planet (50% of oxygen production)
- they change carbon dioxide back to oxygen
- but: rain forests are being damaged very seriously

Greenhouse effect
- without it, there would be no life on our planet, because it traps solar radiation
- on the other hand, it warms the earth because it prevents heat from escaping
- manmade atmospheric emissions result in climate changes: the rise of Earth’s temperature leads e.g. to the melting of arctic ice (icebergs), flooding of large areas etc.

Ozone
- it forms a layer (vrstva) in upper atmosphere, this layer protects the Earth from ultraviolet rays (UV radiation) which can cause skin cancer
- this layer is damaged by manmade gases (factories, power stations, cars etc.) – this leads to the so called “ozone hole” (some areas of the ozone layer are getting thinner and thinner ……)
