14. Problems of today’s world

There are many problems of our time and we can divide them into several groups:
economic problems, global problems, moral issues, religious problems etc.

Economic problems:

The first problem is unemployment. This means the number of people without work. They receive unemployment benefits - money paid regularly by the state. In some regions the unemployment rate is very high. There are many reasons for this. Big factories close down and foreign companies move their production to places where the labour force is much cheaper. People do not move to find another job because there are not cheap flats to rent. The highest number of the unemployed people is in the group with basic education.

Workoholism:

A workoholic is a person who is addicted to work. He or she is unable to stop working. Such a person does not have time for anything else – the job is the most important thing in his or her life.

Global problems:

Earthquakes – It’s the moment when the earth moves, buildings are destroyed, people are killed.
Hurricanes, floods, droughts.
The climate is changing because of changes caused by people.
The world’s population increases very quickly, now it’s more than 6 billion people.
A very big problem is famine.
Other problems caused by people are terrorist attacks, major accidents, epidemics, and wars.

Crime issues:

Prositution – is described as the oldest profession in the world. It means earning money by having sex with anyone who will pay for it. In some countries it is allowed to practise prostiution, but not openly.
Drugs – are very dangerous. They badly damage people’s health, people can die of an overdose or they can have their life destroyed by contractiong AIDS.
Lawbreaking – various kinds of crimes: thefts, murders, hijacking, robberies, corruption etc.
